I'm curious Chris why you went thru with the rooks exchanges there (moves 16 to 20). I think you gain a little with 16. Bg4 .. That pins Brad's knight and you gain material because I do not think he can bring any more fire power in for defense of the knight.
I agree, that move Ed pointed out 16.Bg4 is deadly, definitely wins the knight. Ed, the game was a draw, look at the info right under Chris v Brad, the location, date, and result. At the end, the kings both are tied to defense, and pawns pushes end up either losing or drawing, so they would just repeat until a draw with king moves in the center. At least that is how I see it. I could be missing something. I think Ed hit the nail on the head, the game was really decidedly a draw after the massive exchange on d7. (which was 6 captures on d7, pretty impressive)
16 Bg4 would have won! I missed it. I looked at Bg4 and miscalculated during the game. I thought c5 was a good defense, because the knight was protecting it. It wasn't! The move I looked at just before that was BxP, which the knight does protect against. Then when I looked at Bg4 I thought the knight also protected a c5 advance. I sometimes see myself do that after a series of tough chess moves. I get confused between potential candidate moves or defenses and miscalculate, which I did here. Patience and when you see a good move look for a better one. Although I did see the series of exchanges would likely lead to a draw, I felt there was a better move. But then I said “hey a draw against Brad would be good.”
Thanks everyone for the commentary. Your analysis was right on and will he me (us!) learn from our games!
Ed, good to see you contributing to our blog. Your analysis is very helpful. Hopefully you can start showing up again at our meetings. We would like to go over games and analyze them during part of the meetings, too.
Are you coming to the library on Thursday, April 14th?
THE TWINSBURG CHESS CLUB Twinsburg, Ohio
A chess club for all ages and levels. We play casual games every Saturday. We meet at the Twinsburg Public Library Summer hours 10:00 - 2:00 Non-Summer Hours 2:00 - 6:00.
This site is dedicated to the exploration of chess. I plan to post games that have been played at our club and present them in a format that will allow all of us to review and analyze our games. Feel free to email the moves from your games and I will post them. Just include who played white and who played black and I will put it into a viewer.
This way we can all get a chance to revisit our games and provide each other feedback and learn from each other.
So was this a draw? or are there moves missing?

I think 8.Bc3 saves the d pawn over the next few moves.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ed's comment re 16. Don't see what else black can bring to the knight's defense.

ReplyDeleteI think 15 Bg4 was best. Funny how I see that now.
